Recovery And Your Job

Addiction is a disease. Wisdom will help you fight and win the battle while reclaiming your life from drugs, alcohol or behavioral addictions.

Alcohol and drug addiction exist at all levels of American society. It’s not unusual for high ranking employees within a workplace to battle addiction problems. If you find it difficult to get to work or concentrate at work after a bout with alcohol or drugs, it may be time to look into addiction rehab options before a dangerous situation becomes worse. Many businesses offer Employee Assistance Programs, or EAPs, through their Human Resource departments or third-party agencies.

At Wisdom, we have developed a one of a kind program that works closely with your individual health insurance company to aid with the financial portion of drug and alcohol abuse treatments. Our Greater Los Angeles Employee Assistance Programs also extend to an employees family. If a employee is dealing with a family member stuck in the battle with addiction, this affects the employee greatly. We at Wisdom Treatment centers know how hard it can be having a alcoholic or drug addict living in the home. This is why we developed the employee family assistance program.

What Are Employment Assistance Programs?

An alcohol or drug addiction can affect a person’s ability to be productive on the job, even when alcohol or drug use only occurs during after work hours. Employment Assistance Programs are designed to help employees deal with any personal issues that affect their job performance. While talking to your employer about an addiction problem may seem like putting your neck in a noose, it may be the best way to go about keeping your job.

At our southern California recovery center's Employment Assistance Program, we have representatives that will take the time to focus on any problems you may be having in the workplace, including alcohol and drug-related issues. Employers offer EAP benefits to employees as a way to maintain worker productivity by helping you and other employees; the employer is in effect reducing the overall costs involved with running a business.

EAP Assessment

If an alcohol or drug addiction problem gets to the point where you need to take a leave of absence, it’s always best to go through an employer’s EAP when possible. In most cases, your supervisor will refer you to the Employee Assistance Program whenever a leave of absence is requested. Wisdom Treatment centers can help you take this first step in getting the care you deserve without the additional worry of job loss.

We work with EAP representatives closely :
  • Processing all necessary paperwork
  • Assessing your situationCreating a treatment plan
  • Processing disability claims
  • Processing all claims with your health insurance
According to Drugabuse.gov , an estimated 75 percent of people who suffer from alcohol or drug addiction issues currently hold  a job in the United States.

Work Leaves

Under FMLA laws employees can take up to 12 weeks of leave within a year’s time. Leaves can be scheduled in intervals or worked into a modified work schedule.

Work leaves can also be used in cases where an inpatient stay is necessary to ensure a successful recovery process. As inpatient stays typically last for 30 days or more, the leave provision eliminates any concerns you may have about missing too much work while in treatment. Wisdom Treatment Centers will assist you in finding an inpatient program and making the correct choices to pause work stress while you recover in one of our outpatient centers.

If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction and worried about work or employer problems, Give us a call to talk about your options. Wisdom Treatment Center employs industry leading case managers and we are well equipped to deal with these types of issues. We have certified counsellors standing by to assist you gaining the life you deserve.

ADA and FMLA Protections?

The Adults With Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) are two federal laws that protect employee rights within the workplace. ADA provisions prohibit employers from discriminating against employees who have known disabilities. As alcohol/drug addiction is classified as a medical disease, ADA provisions apply to someone who struggles with alcohol or drug addiction. ADA laws work to ensure employees seeking help with alcohol problems can receive the attention and services they need through an employer’s EAP department.

As of yet, these same provisions do not apply to employees who struggle with drug addiction problems, though certain exceptions may apply if a person is no longer using. These exceptions come into play in the case of someone who is a “recovering addict.” If another disabling condition is present, such as alcoholism or specific psychological disorders, an employee can still qualify under ADA protections provided they’re currently engaging in drug use.

FMLA laws make it possible for employees to obtain a leave of absence in cases where a medical condition prevents them from working. The same provisions used for alcohol and drug addictions apply under FMLA laws. This means an employee with an alcohol addiction or a recovering addict can request a leave of absence without jeopardizing their employment status as long as it’s medically necessary.
